Hacking Policy Council: What You Should Know About Its Launch

What Is the Hacking Policy Council?

The Hacker News, and many other news websites, announced a couple of weeks ago that Google had created the Hacking Policy Council along with some other companies (which include bug bounty ones like HackerOne, Bugcrowd, and Intigriti, as well as Intel and the female-owned business that we previously mentioned in our blog – Luta Security).

According to the Center for Cybersecurity Policy and Law, the Hacking Policy Council is "a group of experts dedicated to creating a more favorable legal, policy, and business environment for good faith security research, penetration testing, independent repair for security, and vulnerability disclosure and management." What this essentially means is that Google and the aforementioned companies teamed up to improve policies for ethical hackers, businesses, and the government around vulnerability management and disclosure.

TechTarget mentions the many benefits that the Hacking Policy Council aims to bring to the Cybersecurity community, such as funding more research in Cybersecurity, especially to prevent zero-day attacks, which are exploits of flaws that haven't been discovered by developers yet.

Another benefit mentioned, for example, is the protection of ethical hackers and the strengthening of the community that actively works to secure assets. HackerOne also published an article explaining what the Hacking Policy Council will be doing and its benefits for society in case you'd like to check it out.

Why Should You Care About It?

If you are in the Cybersecurity community (and I mean everybody who is somehow involved with it, no matter if you are an experienced or an aspiring professional), it's very important to know that a council has been created by industry leaders in order to address some of the problems that exist in the community.

Even in general, it's always good to keep up with what is happening around our country and the world, especially when it comes to Information Security. This indirectly affects any living person since the council is trying to minimize exploits that could literally happen to anybody or any business.

This is a celebrated move, and I'm excited to see what great improvements they will bring to the Cybersecurity industry. I also hope this post has sparked your interest in the exciting things that are happening in the Cybersecurity community!
